Today, the Emerging Technology Observatory is rolling out a new update to our Map of Science. This tool offers policymakers and researchers an open, interactive way to pinpoint key trends, hotspots, and concepts in global science and technology – and today's update makes it more intuitive and user-friendly than ever.

Human-readable titles and summaries

Previously, the research clusters featured in the Map of Science were only identified by their ID number and a list of key concepts or keywords associated with the research in that cluster. While useful, it could sometimes take a bit of mental heavy lifting to stitch those keywords together and understand the overarching theme of the research.

To make exploring the Map more seamless, every research cluster now includes a clear title and a one-sentence summary describing exactly what kind of research is included within it. Having these human-readable titles and summaries makes it much easier to figure out what a cluster is about at a quick glance, saving you time and effort as you browse.

Visible wherever you need them

We've integrated these new titles and summaries throughout the interface so that context is always at your fingertips. You can now find them in:

  • The main map view: Simply hover your cursor over any cluster on the map to instantly see its title and summary.

  • The list view: Scan through multiple clusters quickly with titles and summaries displayed right in the search and filter results.
