Attention Substack users! ETO blog posts are also available on Substack.

September marks a year of service for Scout, ETO’s discovery tool for Chinese-language writing on science and technology. Scout compiles, tags, and condenses news and commentary from a range of Chinese sources, with results available through an easy-to-use web interface and a customizable email service. Users across industry, academia, media and government rely on Scout’s diverse coverage and plain-English summaries to stay current and find new perspectives - and with a year of refinements behind us, it’s easier than ever to use Scout to gain insight.

Here are highlights from our work over the past year:

Expanded coverage brings you the latest from diverse Chinese sources

Scout now features writing from more than a dozen Chinese science and tech news outlets, including government media as well as nonstate websites, academic journals, and AI-focused publications. Use Scout to hear from players across China’s science and tech landscape, from leading researchers, entrepreneurs, and officials to “netizen” commentators. Read more about Scout’s sources.

Browse, track, and subscribe to new subject-matter tags

We’ve steadily expanded Scout’s tag list over the last year, helping you follow coverage on the specific topics that matter to you. Try browsing Scout by:

Pinpoint relevant articles with our new search function

If you’re looking for something more precise than Scout’s tags can offer, give the new keyword search a try. The search runs over all article titles and summaries - for example, you can look through the archive for specific organizations (Huawei, Fudan University), technologies (photovoltaics, quantum key distribution), or common phrases (“low-altitude economy”).

At least once a month, we send out summaries of our most recent Scout Editor’s Picks. Subscribing to our Substack or following our blog (also available through RSS) are the easiest ways to keep up to date.

As always, we're glad to help you get the most out of Scout and our other resources. Visit our support hub to contact us, book live support with an ETO staff member or access the latest documentation for our tools and data. 🤖
