What is this dataset?
The ETO-CSET NICE-O*NET Crosswalk maps cybersecurity-related Occupational Information Network (O*NET) codes to the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce framework, which establishes a common lexicon of cybersecurity work roles, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Developed by CSET analysts, the Crosswalk aims to provide clarity around the boundaries of the cybersecurity workforce, enable conversion between O*NET and NICE, and help workforce researchers, cyber analysts, policy implementers, and others use O*NET and NICE in tandem.

What are its main limitations?
- The list of cybersecurity O*NET codes included in the Crosswalk is not necessarily definitive nor exhaustive of all cybersecurity-related work. It reflects CSET researchers' interpretation of cybersecurity work, incorporating input and internal documentation from the NICE and O*NET programs.
- O*NET codes do not directly correspond to the categories in the NICE framework, so some of the category correspondences in the Crosswalk are imperfect; the O*NET code may cover more or less types of jobs than the similar roles in the NICE framework.
We hope that the cybersecurity research community can use the Crosswalk as a starting point to spur further discussion, while understanding that these classifications are imperfect.

Structure and content
The Crosswalk is a single table with the following fields:

| NICE Category | text | One or more NICE work role categories corresponding to the O*NET code. Since O*NET codes often encapsulate multiple work roles in the NICE framework, the Crosswalk matches each code to broader NICE work role categories as well as individual roles. |
| NICE Work Roles | text | One or more NICE work roles corresponding to the O*NET code. |
Sources and methodology
To develop the Crosswalk, CSET's workforce team consulted external resources including:
- Lists of cybersecurity-related O*NET codes kept internally by the Department of Labor and the NICE framework managers
- Cybersecurity-related SOC codes identified in a May 2024 National Center for Science and Engineering Statistic report
- An internal crosswalk maintained by the NICE framework managers
The final Crosswalk reflects these sources as well as CSET researchers' subject-matter expertise and analytic judgment.
