ETO-CSET NICE-O*NET Crosswalk

Overview

What is this dataset?

The ETO-CSET NICE-O*NET Crosswalk maps cybersecurity-related Occupational Information Network (O*NET) codes to the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce framework, which establishes a common lexicon of cybersecurity work roles, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Developed by CSET analysts, the Crosswalk aims to provide clarity around the boundaries of the cybersecurity workforce, enable conversion between O*NET and NICE, and help workforce researchers, cyber analysts, policy implementers, and others use O*NET and NICE in tandem.

How do I get it?

Access the ETO-CSET NICE-O*NET Crosswalk here.

What are its sources?

The Crosswalk is an original resource created and maintained by analysts on CSET's workforce team.

What are its main limitations?

  • The list of cybersecurity O*NET codes included in the Crosswalk is not necessarily definitive nor exhaustive of all cybersecurity-related work. It reflects CSET researchers' interpretation of cybersecurity work, incorporating input and internal documentation from the NICE and O*NET programs.
  • O*NET codes do not directly correspond to the categories in the NICE framework, so some of the category correspondences in the Crosswalk are imperfect; the O*NET code may cover more or less types of jobs than the similar roles in the NICE framework.

We hope that the cybersecurity research community can use the Crosswalk as a starting point to spur further discussion, while understanding that these classifications are imperfect.

What are the terms of use?

This dataset is subject to ETO's general terms of use. If you use it, please cite us.

How do I cite it?

Please cite the "ETO-CSET NICE-O*NET Crosswalk," including the link.

Structure and content

The Crosswalk is a single table with the following fields:

Column nameTypeDescription
O*NET CodetextA cybersecurity-related O*NET code.
O*NET NametextThe name corresponding to the O*NET code.
NICE CategorytextOne or more NICE work role categories corresponding to the O*NET code. Since O*NET codes often encapsulate multiple work roles in the NICE framework, the Crosswalk matches each code to broader NICE work role categories as well as individual roles.
NICE Work RolestextOne or more NICE work roles corresponding to the O*NET code.

Sources and methodology

To develop the Crosswalk, CSET's workforce team consulted external resources including:

The final Crosswalk reflects these sources as well as CSET researchers' subject-matter expertise and analytic judgment.

Maintenance

How are the data updated?

The Crosswalk is maintained manually by CSET's workforce team. Feedback is welcome: please contact Maggie Wu with suggestions.
